Q: this came with a knurled know where you insert the dial indicator on the stand. what is that used for?

The horizontal bar is in 2 pieces joined by an adjustable spring clip which allows fine adjustment of the needle height at the test point. The knurled nut at 1 o'clock on the gauge casing is for zeroing the indicator by turning the bezel when the nut is loosened.

Q: Can this block and gauge be set to measure vertical faces. i.e can the gauge be set horizontally? Thanks. Regards

If I understand the question correctly; yes. My first task with it was to check run out (wobble) of my table saw blade. Also used it horizontally for accurate lathe spindle work, with the magnetic clamp on the caste iron bedways. For the aluminium saw table top I had to devise my own clamping system. B.V.F.

Q: Fine Adjustment or Not ?

The fine adjust is by sliding the clock along the bar until the hand starts to move.Then clamp it.Or else demagnatise the base and and slide the whole thing until the hand starts as above. There is no fine adjust on the clock itself. There is however a spring loaded adjuster on the bar which will enable you to present the pointer towards the work by small amounts. Hope this helps. DJ.
