Q: How does this work with a Brothers se400?

Well it works for my SE600 which uses the same hoop as the SE400 but you need the SA434 multi-positional hoop in order to use the cap frame.

Q: What is the size of the insert, i have a se600, which it should fit. But my biggest frame is a 4x4?

Had to buy a special part which fits into a 5x7 hoop. Adjust and Fits like a glove. You have to look under hoops for se600
